Hey guys! Just want to let you know that this is going to be one heck of a U.S. Open. Erin Hills is an incredible layout, with almost no dirt being moved on the original design. The natural terrain and undulation offered itself for this golf course to be sculpted quite naturally.
I would say the course is a combination of Whistling Straits and Chambers Bay. Wide fairways, huge greens, and incredible undulations await. Although it has been a few years since I have played I remember the second hole very well, and an amazing stretch of holes to start out the back nine.
The aerial pictures you’ll see this week will amaze you. Start calling your buddies for your next golf trip. Although Erin Hills is located virtually in the middle of nowhere, it is only 35 miles from downtown Milwaukee.
There is a long list of great golf courses within a two-hour drive of Erin Hills. Obviously you’ve got the courses at Kohler (Whistling Straits, The Irish, The River Course, and Meadow Valley). Another absolute gem just south of the Kohler quartet is The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan. Trust me, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more amazing stretch of golf holes than 5-9 at The Bull.
In Milwaukee you’ve got Brown Deer Golf Club, the former host of the Greater Milwaukee Open. The Bog is an Arnold Palmer design and a great course in it’s own right.
If you go north, further into Wisconsin you’ve got the Golf Courses at Lawsonia, on Green Lake. While I have not played them, I hear they are both incredible courses, and are among the Top 10 in Wisconsin.
Further South is the Lake Geneva area, loaded with great golf courses, led by Geneva National, and the Grand Geneva resort.
Of course you’ll be able to get some great brats, beer, and cheese curds on your trip. I promise you guys – these are all great golf courses. 7 of the Top Ten in Wisconsin are mentioned in this article. You could have a lot worse buddy trip than Southern Wisconsin.
Enjoy Erin Hills! My predictions will come later in the week.
